Galoter technology used into UTT-3000 installations was presented at Governors Energy Summit in Salt Lake City (Utah).

By invitation received from director of Office of Energy Development of Utah Ms. S.M. Julian, representatives of the research and design institute Atomenergoproekt from Saint-Petersburg have made a presentation Proven oil shale surface retorting technology GALOTER updated environmentally friendly for application in US at the Unconventional Breakout Session, at the The Global Oil Shale and Oil Sands Industry track.

Attendees have learned from the presentation that, besides designing nuclear power plants, the institute Atomenergoproekt have designed since 1950-s the significant part of the Estonian oil shale industry including two biggest in the world oil shale firing plants (Estonian 1700 MW and Baltic 1800 MW) and all the solid heat carrier installations based on a high speed pyrolysis method Galoter for producing oil from oil shale: UTT-200 in Kivioli in 1950-s, UTT-500 in 1963-1973, two UTT-3000 installations in Narva operating since 1980 till now (known today as Enefit-140), and the latest UTT-3000 commissioned and launched in 2009 in Kohtla Jarve (known today as Petroter). Although the latest modifications of the UTT-3000 meets the strict EU regulations for emissions, the technology provider continuously works on improvements of the process. Thanks to the closed water circulation cycle the water consumption of UTT-3000 installation is 0.7 bbl to produce 1 bbl of oil, the emissions of waste water are zero, also the proper modifications were made to avoid emissions from drying facility, to avoid losses of oil in reactor, to rise efficiency of ash cooling, to lower sulfur in final products, to upgrade oil fractions up to motor fuel quality, to control CO2 emissions etc.

All these improvements were reviewed and discussed during the presentation.
Today ATOMENERGOPROEKT is involved in oil shale projects in Jordan, Israel, Serbia,
Morocco, Myanma, Russia and Uzbekistan.

The head of the Utah office of energy development invited JSC SPb ATOMENERGOPROEKT to take part in the next Governors Energy Summit in 2014.
